Victor Vasarely

Victor Vasarely

Artist Biography

Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian-born painter who became a French citizen in 1959. He was the main originator and one of the leading practitioners of Optical Art.

Typically, he created a hallucinatory impression of movement through visual ambiguity, using alternating positive-negative shapes interpruted in such a way as to suggest underlying secondary shapes. He also explored Kinetic Art.

From the mid-1950's he wrote a number of manifestos, which, together with his paintings, were a major influence on younger artists such as Bridget Riley working in the same fields. In 1970, the artist created a Vasarely Museum in Gordes and in 1976 formed a Vasarely Foundation near Aix-en-Provence.
